In the spiritual realm, love is light and hate is dark
He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. (1 John 2:9-11)
Darkness is the absence of light - light always shines away the darkness, but darkness cannot overcome the light
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:5)
I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. (John 12:46)
By choosing light over dark, Christ over Satan, an extraordinary thing happens -- Christís light becomes alive within us
While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. (John 12:46)
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. (Ephesians 5:8)
The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light. (Luke 11:34-36)
To walk as children of the light, we must allow Jesus to direct our steps
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
For You will light my lamp; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28)
The LORD will be to you an everlasting light. (Isaiah 60:19)
Now that Jesus, the light of the world, has risen, it is up to use to shine His light into the darkness - and not keep it to ourselves
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2Corinthians 4:1-6)
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. (1Peter 2:9)
Make sure everyone knows that it's not your light, but rather Christ's light that shines from within you.
And we, who with unveiled faces, all reflect the Lordís Glory. 2Corinthians 3:15 (NIV)
What will happen if we receive and shine the Lord's Glory?
Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' (Isaiah 58:8-9)
But we must avoid those actions that diminish the Lord's light and instead focus the Lord's light on those in need, spiritually and materially.
If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. (Isaiah 58:10)
